Discussion around the Oscar-nominated\u00a0Emilia P\u00e9rez\u00a0<\/em>has been marred by Gasc\u00f3n’s unearthed tweets that contained offensive language <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n \n\tZoe Salda\u00f1a<\/a> has made clear that she\u2019s disappointed by her Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> <\/a>co-star Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n after her offensive social media posts have caused uproar and are overshadowing the historic moment for the Oscar-nominated film.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI\u2019m sad. Time and time again, that\u2019s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened,\u201d Salda\u00f1a told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m also disappointed. I can\u2019t speak for other people\u2019s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tDirected by Jacques Audiard and also starring Selena Gomez, Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> received an astounding 13 Academy Award nominations. Salda\u00f1a is nominated for best actress in a supporting role, her first time up for the prestigious award. Gasc\u00f3n is also up for an Oscar, for best leading actress \u2014\u00a0the first time an openly trans actress has been nominated. But in late January, Gasc\u00f3n hurriedly deleted her X\/Twitter account after users discovered several of her posts contained offensive comments about George Floyd and Muslims. Gasc\u00f3n called Islam an \u201cinfection for humanity\u201d and Floyd a \u201cdrug addict swindler.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\tSalda\u00f1a said she\u2019s still trying to allow herself to \u201cexperience that joy\u201d for the film making history, noting its intention was always inclusivity. But Salda\u00f1a acknowledged that \u201cwe are also individuals who are responsible for everything that we say and everything that we do.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tIn wake of the unearthed posts, Netflix has begun distancing itself from Gasc\u00f3n<\/a>, removing her from pre-scheduled events in the lead-up to the Academy Awards show on March 2. Director Audiard said on Wednesday that he hasn\u2019t spoken to Gasc\u00f3n<\/a>, nor does he want to. Calling her tweets \u201cinexcusable\u201d and \u201chateful,\u201d Audiard added, \u201cShe\u2019s really playing the victim. She\u2019s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It\u2019s as if she thought that words don\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n
